In 1999, the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) established an office in Edinburgh, coinciding with the devolution of powers to Scotland. The following year, eminent political scientist Professor Sir John Curtice joined the team as its then Head of Research. After merging with Scottish Health Feedback in 2004, the Edinburgh office was renamed as the Scottish Centre for Social Research (ScotCen).

The Scottish Centre for Social Research generates evidence that uncovers the reality of people’s lives in Scotland. We engage with and listen to the public, ensuring their voice and experience helps to shape the decisions and services that affect their lives.

Twenty-five years on and ScotCen is marking this milestone, inviting colleagues, clients and collaborators to join us for a celebration. Hosted by the Royal Society of Edinburgh on 10th December 2024, we will be showcasing findings from a variety of research projects from across the years and highlighting their contribution to policy development and society. This will include the Growing Up in Scotland study, the Scottish Health Survey, the Scottish Social Attitudes survey and many mixed method and qualitative research projects and evaluations.
