In this session, Joel Williams (Verian) will talk through the research evidence underpinning the design of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) Participation Survey, one of England's largest push-to-web general population surveys. He will cover the reasoning behind the contact design, the login process, the use of paper questionnaires, and the incentive system, as well as other important design components.

Joel WilliamsUK Head of Methods at VerianJoel Williams is the UK Head of Methods at Verian, leading a team of ten survey methodologists and data analysts, who provide statistical and data science support to client service colleagues. Joel has worked on general population push-to-web studies for well over a decade, including two for DCMS: the pioneering Community Life Survey (since 2012), and the more recently initiated Participation Survey (since 2021). Joel is also a member of the senior leadership team of the multi-stranded Survey Futures study, which has the objective of evaluating and trialling new methods to deal with new challenges in survey research.
