Evaluation of ‘Learning Language and Loving It’ - The Hanen Program® for Early Childhood Educators
About
We are evaluating Learning Language and Loving It – The Hanen Program® for Early Childhood Educators (Hanen LLLI). This programme aims to support early years practitioners to help young children build their language and social skills through specialised ways of interacting and communicating with children during normal daily routines.
Our evaluation will be a randomised controlled trial of the effect of Hanen LLLI on the language attainment and socio-emotional development of 3-4 year old nursery children in the North of England (Cumbria, the North East and North Yorkshire), East Midlands and the Humber and West Midlands.
What is the evaluation looking at?
The evaluation comprises two parts, an impact evaluation and a process evaluation.
The impact evaluation aims to answer the following questions:
- What is the impact of Hanen LLLI on the language attainment and socio-emotional development of 3-4 year-old children?
- Does the impact of Hanen LLLI differ by Early Years Pupil Premium status?
The process study will be carried out alongside the impact study and aims to answer the following questions:
- How is Hanen LLLI delivered, and what are the facilitators and barriers to delivery in maintained nurseries and PVI settings?
- What are the perceived benefits of Hanen LLLI for early years practitioners, settings and children?
- Is there evidence that Hanen LLLI leads to changes in practitioner practice? How can we better support practitioners towards an effective cascading of knowledge?
- What can be learnt for future delivery of Hanen LLLI?
- What is the per-pupil cost of Hanen LLLI?
What does the evaluation entail?
The evaluation will run from October 2022 to July 2023. Participating nurseries will be randomly selected to either take part in Hanen LLLI or continue providing childcare and teaching as usual.
