Gayle Munro

Gayle joined NatCen’s Centre for Children and Families in April 2021. She has more than 20 years’ experience of (mainly qualitative) social research within the voluntary sector in the UK and at research institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany and China. Her fields of research experience include migration and trafficking, homelessness, children and families, drug and alcohol services, and special educational needs and disabilities. Gayle was previously Head of Research and Evidence for the National Children’s Bureau and led the research team at The Salvation Army. She has previously taught and run training modules in qualitative methods and research governance.

At NatCen, Gayle is evaluation director for the national evaluation of A Better Start, the ten-year (2015-2025), £215 million programme set-up by The National Lottery Community Fund, the largest funder of community activity in the UK. She also leads on the UNHCR-commissioned evaluations of two Alternatives to Detention, being piloted in the UK under the Home Office’s Community Engagement Pilot (CEP) series.

Gayle’s doctorate explored the transnational experiences of migrants from the former Yugoslavia living in Britain.
