UK Daily Life

UK Daily Life is a UK-wide study which aims to find out how people spend their time, and how much they are enjoying their daily lives.

About the study

UK Daily Life is run by the Centre for Time Use Research (based at UCL – University College London) to measure how people use their time. This type of study is called a “time-use study” and has been already carried out in the past. This new study will be looking at how things such as leisure time, childcare, work or time spent in retirement are changing. Taking part in the study is a great opportunity to show the reality of life and how that varies across different groups of people. Measurement of what matters most to people is hard to keep up with and for that reason the survey is designed to capture life in detail. As always, your data will be kept anonymous and secure. Knowing how people feel makes it possible for life to be improved in many ways. That could mean better services, better health initiatives, or more action on loneliness or other issues of public concern.

Why take part and what will it involve?

By taking part you will make your voice and experiences heard and support important research into how we are spending our time as a nation. The results of studies such as this can provide information on which decisions can be made about policies and initiatives that improve aspects of everyday life. We would like you to tell us what you did on two specific days. As well as what you have done, we would like to know, for example, how long these activities took, who you did them for who you did them with and how much you enjoyed them. We will also ask some questions about you, so we can understand how different types of people spend their time.

The questionnaire

Thank you for your interest. The UK Daily Life study is not live at the moment.

Why have I been selected to take part?

When you previously took part in either the British Social Attitudes, Scottish Social Attitudes or the Consumer Protection Study you were asked if it would be okay to contact you about research in the future. At the time you provided us with some contact details. We are now inviting NatCen Opinion Panel members on behalf of the Centre for Time Use Research (CTUR) to take part in the UK Daily Life study. The aim is to find out how people in the UK spend their time and how they feel. Everyone we have invited to take part has been carefully selected to provide a truly representative picture of people living in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. We want to represent people of all walks of life and a full range of daily life experiences. By taking part you will make sure the experiences of people like you are represented.

Who are CTUR?

The Centre for Time Use Research (CTUR) is an ESRC-designated Legacy Research Centre based at University College London (UCL) specialising in the collection and analysis of time use diary data, disseminating both skills and datasets to a wide international audience, and conducting a world-leading research programme.
