You and Your Work Privacy Notice

In line with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), there are certain things that we need to let you, a research participant, know about how your information will be processed. In this privacy notice, we explain the legal basis for data processing, who will have access to your personal data, how your data will be used, stored and deleted and who you can contact with a query or a complaint.

What is the legal basis for processing my data?

Professor Alan Felstead at Cardiff University has overall responsibility for this study. Cardiff University is therefore the data controller for this project. This means that they are responsible for deciding the purpose and legal basis for processing data. The legal basis for processing data is “public task”.  Participation in the survey is voluntary.

To contact NatCen with any questions about the research, please e-mail us at ses2023@natcen.ac.uk or call 0800 652 2704.

Who will have access to my personal data?

The National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) are carrying out the interviews for this study and will have access to the contact details you provide and the answers you give during the interview.

Your address will be given to our printing service provider (AE Simmons http://www.simmonsprinters.com). This organisation is on NatCen’s approved supplier list and compliant with all of NatCen’s information security policies as well as any data protection legislation.

How will my data be treated?

Any personal details will be kept confidential and held securely by NatCen. The information you provide will not be used for marketing purposes and your personal details will not be passed on to the Cardiff University or any of the other research organisations involved in the project.

At the end of the survey you will be asked if you would be happy for NatCen to retain your contact details so that the research team (or someone working on their behalf) can get in touch with you for future research. If you give permission your contact details will be retained for 36 months. If you do not give permission your contact details will be securely deleted once fieldwork for the study has been completed. The other data you provided, including your survey responses, will be retained indefinitely so that it can be used for research.

Findings from the study will be written up and published in research reports. The reports will combine your data with that of other research participants for the purposes of statistical analysis and will not include your name or any other information that could identify you or your household.

Data from the survey will be deposited with the UK Data Service and made available to non-commercial users for research purposes.  The main dataset will be anonymised meaning that it will not be possible for researchers to identify you or your household from the data provided.  A second version of the dataset – which will not contain any personal details about you but from which it may be possible for you to be identified through the unique combination of responses you gave during the survey – will also be made available. This dataset will be made available only to approved researchers on request and for specific purposes.

Who can I contact with a query or a complaint?

This will not be possible once the data has been anonymised.
