The Travel Survey: Privacy notice

At NatCen, we are committed to protect your privacy and to being transparent about how we collect and use personal data. Personal data is information that identifies you, separate from others - for example your name, postal address, and email address.

We will treat your information in the strictest confidence under current data protection legislation.

Why is personal data being collected?

Your response will help Sustrans and local council and government partners to understand travel behaviour, inform policy decisions and justify investment in your area.

The legal basis for processing the data is legitimate interest, as Sustrans and local council and government partners have an interest in your opinion on local travel.

Sustrans, as the data controller, will ensure that your personal data will only be used for research and statistical purposes.

You will never receive any sales or marketing calls as a result of taking part in the survey.

What personal data will be collected?

The survey does not aim to collect personal data, but a combination of unique responses may enable you to be identified.

The survey includes questions asking about special category data, specifically your ethnicity sexual orientation and disability, which is more sensitive and so needs more protection.

How is personal data collected?

Survey participant households are selected from the Royal Mail’s publicly available list of residential addresses.

You are invited to complete the survey online or on paper.Taking part is completely voluntary and you can skip any questions you do not wish to answer.

Where will my personal data be stored?

Your data will be stored within the UK and European Economic Area.

Who will my personal data be shared with?

Some elements of the survey processing, such as printing and postage will be sub-contracted. All sub-contractors working for NatCen come from our Approved Supplier List. These are suppliers that are already vetted by us with signed contracts and agreement already in place and refreshed every 12 months.

Sustrans, as the data controller, will only share survey data with the relevant local council and government partners, and others for research purposes. Due to the potential for personal data to be present in the survey data, this will always be protected by a data sharing agreement.

How long will you keep my personal data?

NatCen will retain your personal data until the 31st of December 2024, and then it will be destroyed.

Sustrans will retain the anonymous survey data indefinitely for research purposes, as the survey data will continue to be useful to researchers and policy makers.

You have the right to request access to your data, to amend it if it is incorrect, or to ask for it to be deleted. You may also object to the processing of your data or ask us to restrict the processing.

This will not be possible once the data has been anonymised.
