This privacy notice explains how your personal data (e.g., any information that could identify you) collected for the purposes of this research will be used.

Who is the data controller and data processor?

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is the “data controller” for this research,, which means DCMS decides how your personal information will be collected.

What personal information will be collected?

During recruitment we will collect the following personal information to decide if we can include you in the research and ensure we are talking to people with a range of experiences:

  • Stakeholders: Name, contact details and job information.
  • Young people:: Name, contact details, details about disability / health condition, age, any experiences of loneliness / disconnection, employment status,  gender, ethnicity, living situation. 

What is the legal basis for processing my data?

The lawful basis for collecting your personal information is ‘Public Task’. This means we are carrying out this work to help the government better understand how loneliness affects young people. 

Who will my data be shared with 

NatCen will use the information collected from the interviews / conversations to write a report for DCMS. This report will not include anything that can reveal your identity. Your name and any personal data will be stored securely. The following organisations will have access to your data:

  • The NatCen research team. 
  • RSM UK Consulting (RSM) - who are partnering with NatCen on this project and will be conducting research interviews, analysing interview data and helping to write up the report for DCMS.  If your interview is with a RSM researcher then they will also have access to your personal data.
  • Criteria - If you have been recruited by Criteria, they will also have access to the personal data that you have provided them with (e.g. your name and contact details). If you have been recruited through another organisation (e.g. through someone you know at a local charity), they will also have any information that you have provided to them.
  • McGowan Transcriptions - (With your consent) your personal data will also be securely sent to McGowan Transcriptions who will type up the conversation and provide the NatCen/RSM research team with a written transcript.

Do I have to take part?

Taking part is voluntary. You are free to withdraw at any time without consequence, and you do not have to answer any questions you do not want to.

How long will my information be kept for?

NatCen and RSM will securely hold your information. This will be held for up to12 months after the project ends.

Your rights

You have rights over your personal information. The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) is the supervisory authority for data protection and maintains a full explanation of these rights on their website.

Will I be able to change my mind about taking part at a later date?

Yes, you are free to change your mind about being involved in the research at any time, including after your interview. However, once all responses are put together and reviewed, we would not be able to change the overall results by removing individual information. However, you can always request that your personal data be deleted or updated, and we will let you know immediately if this is possible or not.
