Yoli Oswald

Researcher

Yoli is a Researcher in the Crime, Justice and Security team at the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen). Her research interests include hate crime, violence against women and girls (VWAG), migration and counterterrorism.

Before starting at NatCen in 2023, Yoli conducted qualitative research studies into the prevalence and impacts of interpersonal or "street-level" Islamophobia on the national and religious identities of first, second and third-generation British Muslim men and women. This research entailed semi-structured interviews with a sample of 39 individuals of diverse ethnic backgrounds, aiming to understand how experiences of everyday Islamophobia shaped their sense of belonging and identity in Britain.

Yoli previously held two research officer roles at Citizens Advice, where she investigated the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on food banks, homelessness, and debt and campaigned for welfare reform.

At NatCen, Yoli has worked within and outside the Crime, Justice and Security team on projects investigating drug policy and intervention, the asylum system and age assessments, and transparency in family courts. Yoli's work encompasses all stages of the research process, including designing recruitment materials, conducting fieldwork, data management, analysis, and reporting.
