About the study

The Wales National Travel Survey has been developed to help Transport for Wales and Welsh Government understand transport and travel in Wales and shape the future of transport.

Whatever your circumstances, whether you’re walking or wheeling, cycling, using public transport such as buses or trains or going by car, travelling is a fundamental part of our lives. Whether your trip is for work, leisure or a weekend getaway these journeys contribute to how the whole of Wales operates.

We are reaching out to households across Wales to ask people to take part in an online pilot and take this opportunity share their views on transport in Wales.

Why take part and what will it involve?

Taking part online ensures that the opinions and experiences of people like you will be understood. Taking part is voluntary. You will be asked questions about yourself, how you choose to travel, and the journeys you have recently made.

Why have I been selected to take part?

We have chosen your address at random from a list of all residential addresses in Wales, kept by the Post Office. This is to make sure that the survey represents the whole country. The findings will not be able to identify you or those in your household.

Who is carrying out the research?

The National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) is undertaking the survey on behalf of Transport for Wales. NatCen is Britain’s largest independent social research agency. For over 50 years, we have worked with charities, government and academic institutions to find out what people really think about big issues. We are independent of all government departments and political parties you can see more here.

Do I have to answer all the questions?

Taking part is voluntary and you do not have to answer any questions you don’t want to. You can stop the survey at any time.

Are my answers kept confidential?

We will treat the information you give us in the strictest confidence under current data protection legislation. The results collected are used for statistical purposes only and will not identify you or your family. You will never receive any junk mail as a result of speaking to us.

Your full name and address will not be passed to anyone outside the National Centre for Social Research without your permission, and we never pass on your details to other organisations for commercial purposes.
