Gambling Survey Experimental Phase follow-up interviews

As you took part in the Gambling Commission survey at the end of last year (2022) we would like to invite you to take part in a follow-up interview.

About the study

The Gambling Commission is undertaking a project to improve the way it collects data on adult gambling. The latest stage of this research involved conducting a survey of the public to understand the nation’s feeling towards lotteries, betting and games. The survey included questions about peoples’ experiences of gambling and the impact of gambling on their lives.

The Gambling Commission has commissioned the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) to conduct follow-up interviews with people who completed the survey to help them better understand the survey data collected on gambling-related impacts. The term gambling-related impacts refers to any positive or negative impact that gambling has had on the health or wellbeing of an individual or community.

What is my involvement?

As you took part in the Gambling Commission survey at the end of last year (2022) we would like to invite you to take part in an interview to talk about how you answered the survey and any impacts gambling has had on you. The interview will last up to 60 minutes and will take place over the phone or using Microsoft Teams, at a time and date convenient for you. With your permission, the interview will be audio recorded using secure and encrypted software, so that there is a detailed and accurate record of the conversation.

As a thank you for your time, you will receive a £30 shopping voucher.

Key interview topics will include:

  • Any experiences you have of your own gambling or the gambling of those close to you;
  • How you chose to answer specific questions in the survey (the interviewer will remind you of how you answered different questions, and ask about the rationale behind your answers);
  • Any impacts you may have experienced connected to your own or someone else’s gambling. This could include any positive or negative impacts on your life, for example related to your relationships, finances or employment.

Is the discussion confidential?

The research team will manage your personal data, which will be stored securely and in strict confidence in accordance with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This research has been approved by NatCen’s Research Ethics Committee.

The information you provide will be combined with data from other interviews and used to write a report for the Gambling Commission. The information you provide will be anonymised in the report so you cannot be identified. Your personal details and the interview data collected will be stored securely and deleted as soon as possible after the completion of the project, due in July 2023.

Do I have to take part?

Participation in the evaluation is entirely voluntary and if you agree to participate you are free to change your mind at any point before, during, and after the interview. During the interview discussion, you are also free not to answer any questions you would prefer not to answer.

How can I take part?

Please email GSGB_interviews@natcen.ac.uk with your availability. However, please note that we may be recruiting from a larger group of potential participants, therefore participation is not guaranteed. We will respond to your email to arrange a short phone call before inviting you to participate in an interview to better understand your experiences and answer any questions you have.
