This live online course is designed to provide researchers with core skills in writing outputs based on analysis of qualitative data. (NatCen trainers)

Price:  £165 for SRA members, £220 for non-members.  It runs in one day and uses Zoom software.


This one day course is designed to provide researchers with core skills in writing outputs based on analysis of qualitative data. It will focus on the techniques needed to display qualitative evidence effectively in both stand-alone qualitative and integrated mixed method reports. The course will be delivered through a mix of taught sessions and practical exercises.


By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Plan and structure reports which include qualitative data;
  • Use written conventions and styles that are appropriate to qualitative data;
  • Contribute to a report which combines qualitative and quantitative data;
  • Display qualitative evidence effectively in a written report; and
  • Understand the factors that underpin quality in written reports of qualitative findings.


  • The challenges of reporting qualitative data;
  • How to plan and structure reports which include qualitative data;
  • Forms, styles and conventions of qualitative reporting;
  • Techniques for avoiding quantitative language in qualitative reporting;
  • Displaying qualitative evidence in written reports;
  • Integrating qualitative and quantitative data in written reports; and
  • How to assess quality in qualitative reporting.

  • Are experienced in other aspects of qualitative research such as data collection or analysis, but are new to writing reports based on qualitative data analysis;

This course assumes an understanding of the basic principles of qualitative research, along with some prior experience of qualitative data analysis.

    Martin Mitchell is a Senior Researcher within the Communities, Work and Income team. He joined the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) in April 2005 as a member of the Qualitative Research Unit.

    Since then, he has worked on a large number of qualitative studies involving the use of in-depth interviews, face-to-face and online focus groups, observations and deliberative methods. Martin has conducted research in many areas including equalities and discrimination, bullying and harassment, same sex relationships, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion and belief, and perceptions of fairness. This has included work funded by the Government Equalities Office, Equality and Human Rights Commission, Acas and the Health & Safety Executive.

    He has taught widely on in-depth interviewing skills, managing challenging interviews, research ethics and research governance and supports the work of other qualitative researchers through his involvement NatCen's Qualitative Methods Group. 

    Before working at NatCen, Martin worked for five years as a Research Fellow at the Institute for Health Services Research, University of Bedfordshire. He conducted qualitative and survey research with a wide range of health and social service users and professionals across the primary care, acute and voluntary sectors. He also worked as Lecturer in Sociology, teaching research methods as well as gender and sexuality modules for Sociology, Social Policy and Women's Studies undergraduates. Martin holds a doctorate examining the implications of gay men's household patterns for the provision of health and social care at London South Bank University and a MA in Sociology and Qualitative Research from Goldsmiths' College, University of London.
