http://www.natcen.ac.uk/ is a site operated by the National Centre for Social Research (“we” or “us”).  We are registered in England and Wales under company number 04392418 and have our registered office at 35 Northampton Square, London, EC1V 0AX. Our charity number is 1091768. We are regulated by the Charity Commission and are a charity as well as a company limited by guarantee.

Changes to these terms

We may revise these terms of use at any time by amending this page.

Please check this page from time to time to take notice of any changes we made, as they are binding on you.

Changes to our site

We may update our site from time to time, and may change the content at any time. However, please note that any of the content on our site may be out of date at any given time, and we are under no obligation to update it .

We do not guarantee that our site, or any content on it, will be free from errors or omissions.

Accessing our site

Our site is made available free of charge and is for information purposes only.

We do not guarantee that our site, or any content on it, will always be available or that access will be uninterrupted. Access to our site is permitted on a temporary basis. We may suspend, withdraw, discontinue or change all or any part of our site without notice. We will not be liable to you if for any reason our site is unavailable at any time or for any period.

You are responsible for making all arrangements necessary for you to have access to our site.

Your account and password

If you choose, or you are provided with, a user identification code, password or any other piece of information as part of our security procedures, you must treat such information as confidential. Each registration is for a single user only. We do not permit you to share your user name and password with any other person nor with multiple users on a network. Responsibility for the security of any passwords rests with you. 

We have the right to disable any user identification code or password, whether chosen by you or allocated by us, at any time, if in our reasonable opinion you have failed to comply with any of the provisions of these terms of use.

If you know or suspect that anyone other than you knows your user identification code or password, you must promptly notify us at info@natcen.ac.uk.

Intellectual property rights

All intellectual property rights in our site, and in the material published on it are owned by the National Centre for Social Research or individual authors. Those works are protected by copyright laws and treaties around the world and no part of this website or its contents may be reproduced, extracted, communicated to the public, distributed or otherwise used, other than for private study or non-commercial use as permitted by the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 (as amended) (the “CDPA”).

To the extent that you are entitled under the CDPA, you may print off one copy, and may download extracts, of any page(s) from our site for your personal use on our site on the following basis:

(a) no documents or related graphics on our site are modified in any way;

(b) no graphics on our site are used separately from the corresponding text; and

(c) this section entitled Intellectual Property Rights must appear in all copies together with any copyright or trade mark notices of any identified contributor.

Our status (and that of any identified contributors, being our licensors) as the authors of content on our site must always be acknowledged.

You must not use any part of the content on our site for commercial or business purposes of any kind without obtaining a licence to do so from us or our licensors. In this context, use for commercial or business purposes shall not include use by registered charities, not for profit organisations or recognised educational establishments where the National Centre for Social Research is attributed as the owner or licensor of the work (as applicable).

If you print off, copy or download any part of our site in breach of these terms of use, your right to use our site will cease immediately and you must, at our option, return or destroy any copies of the materials you have made.

Supply of content

Anyone who supplies content to our site must ensure that such content does not infringe the rights (including intellectual property rights) of any third party.

We assume that all documents and other materials submitted to our site by our researchers do not breach the intellectual property rights of any other persons or bodies. We assume that any versions of research output provided to our site by our researchers are intended for future publication and that the researcher owns the copyright in these materials or has obtained permission to use the materials from the appropriate copyright holder.

If you suspect that a breach of intellectual property rights has occurred, you should email info@natcen.ac.uk immediately with details of the suspected infringement.

No reliance on information

We believe that the research we support is of high quality, and we support peer review of all research output generated by our researchers. However, we are not liable in relation to any conclusions that might be drawn or actions that might be taken on the basis of research published on our site, including preliminary findings of research that might be altered during peer review.

We make all reasonable efforts to ensure that all content is accurate and complete. However, we do not accept liability for any losses or damages which may arise from using or relying on information on our site. We do not warrant the accuracy and completeness of the material on our site. The material on our site is provided "as is", without any conditions, warranties or other terms of any kind.

Limitation of our liability

Nothing in these terms of use excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury arising from our negligence, or our fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or any other liability that cannot be excluded or limited by English law.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we provide you with our site on the basis that we exclude all representations, warranties, conditions and other terms including, without limitation, the conditions implied by law and the use of reasonable care and skill which, but for this legal notice, might have effect in relation to our site. 

We have no obligation to monitor or censor any information that users store within or transmit through our site. We will not be liable to any user for any loss or damage, whether in contract, tort (including negligence), breach of statutory duty, or otherwise, even if foreseeable, arising under or in connection with:

  • use of, or inability to use, our site; or
  • use of or reliance on any content displayed on our site.

Please note that we only provide our site for private study and non-commercial use. You agree not to use our site for any commercial or business purposes, and we have no liability to you for any loss of profit, loss of business, business interruption, loss of business opportunity or anticipated savings.

We will not be liable for any loss or damage caused by a virus, distributed denial-of-service attack, or other technologically harmful material that may infect your computer equipment, computer programs, data or other proprietary material due to your use of our site or to your downloading of any content on it, or on any website linked to it. Uploading content to our site

Whenever you make use of a feature that allows you to upload content to our site, or to make contact with other users of our site, you must comply with the content standards set out in our Acceptable Use Policy

You warrant that any such contribution does comply with those standards, and you will be liable to us and indemnify us for any breach of that warranty.

Any content you upload to our site will be considered non-confidential and non-proprietary, and we have the right to use, copy, distribute and disclose to third parties any such content for any purpose.

We also have the right to disclose your identity to any third party who is claiming that any content posted or uploaded by you to our site constitutes a violation of their intellectual property rights, or of their right to privacy.

The views expressed by other users on our site on our discussion boards, as comments on our blog or by any other means, do not necessarily represent our views or values. We are not responsible for their contents or accuracy and we reserve the right to exclude users at our sole discretion, including those who submit defamatory, illegal, abusive or advertising-related material.

We have the right to remove any posting you make on our site if, in our opinion, your post does not comply with the content standards set out in our Acceptable Use Policy or otherwise at our absolute discretion.

Viruses

We do not guarantee that our site will be secure or free from bugs or viruses.

You are responsible for configuring your information technology, computer programmes and platform in order to access our site. You should use your own virus protection software.

You must not misuse our site by knowingly introducing viruses, trojans, worms, logic bombs or other material which is malicious or technologically harmful. You must not attempt to gain unauthorised access to our site, the server on which our site is stored or any server, computer or database connected to our site. You must not attack our site via a denial-of-service attack or a distributed denial-of service attack. By breaching this provision, you would commit a criminal offence under the Computer Misuse Act 1990. We will report any such breach to the relevant law enforcement authorities and we will co-operate with those authorities by disclosing your identity to them. In the event of such a breach, your right to use our site will cease immediately.

Linking to our site

You may link to our home page, provided you do so in a way that is fair and legal and does not damage our reputation or take advantage of it.

You must not establish a link in such a way as to suggest any form of association, approval or endorsement on our part where none exists.

If you would like to link to our site, you may only do so on the basis that you link to, but do not replicate, the home page of our site, and subject to the following conditions:

(a) you do not remove, distort or otherwise alter the size or appearance of any logos owned or licensed by us;

(b) you do not create a frame or any other browser or border environment around our site;

(c) you do not in any way imply that we are endorsing any products or services other than our own;

(e) you do not otherwise use any of our trade marks displayed on our site (such as NatCen, British Social Attitudes or British Social Attitudes Survey) without express written permission from us;

(f) you do not link from a website that is not owned by you; and

(g) your website does not contain any content that is distasteful, offensive or controversial, infringes any intellectual property rights or other rights of any other person or otherwise does not comply with all applicable laws and regulations.

We expressly reserve the right to revoke your right to link to our site for breach of these terms and to take any action it deems appropriate.

You shall fully indemnify us for any loss or damage, costs, claims or expenses suffered or incurred by us or any of our group companies.

We reserve the right to withdraw linking permission without notice.

In addition to the above, the website in which you are linking must comply in all respects with the content standards set out in our Acceptable Use Policy.

If you wish to make a complaint about our site or its content, you should email info@natcen.ac.uk. We will investigate any complaints about content on our site and remove any content which, in our opinion and at our absolute discretion, is offensive, infringing or inappropriate.

Applicable law

Please note that these terms of use, its subject matter and its formation, are governed by English law. You and we both agree to that the courts of England and Wales will have non-exclusive jurisdiction.
