M1 surveys
About the study
The National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) and AECOM have been commissioned by National Highways, formerly known as Highways England, to carry out research with drivers in the South and West Yorkshire areas. The aim of the research is to better understand experiences of driving on roads in this area, including on sections of the M1 motorway. Findings from the research will be used to inform National Highways’ planning for the future.
The aim of the research is to better understand experiences of driving on roads in this area, including on sections of the M1 motorway. Findings from the research will be used to inform National Highways’ planning for the future.
As part of this research we will be conducting two surveys:
- One with drivers on the M1 conducted at local Motorway Service Areas
- One with drivers living in areas near the M1 to understand experiences of local roads more generally
Taking part in a survey at a Motorway Service Area
The aim of this survey is to hear from drivers, including professional drivers, who have recently driven on certain sections of the M1 to understand views and experiences. Findings from the research will be used to inform National Highways’ planning for the future. Therefore, it is important for National Highways to hear directly from motorway users themselves.

Taking part in a survey at your home
The aim of this survey is to hear from drivers who live in the South and West Yorkshire areas around the M1 motorway to better understand the use of and the experience of driving on different types of roads in your area.
