Confident Resilient Children (CRC) Project Pilot Evaluation
About the study
The CRC Project aims to help children aged 9-11 to develop ways to build their resilience and confidence. The project is currently running in primary schools across Birmingham. It is coordinated by Titan Partnership (www.titan.org.uk) and delivered by Emerge Leadership (www.emerge-leadership.com) and Lime (www.engagelime.com).
We are doing this research for the Youth Endowment Fund. The aim of the research is to find out:
- how the project is delivered across different primary schools in Birmingham, including whether it is delivered as intended
- how schools, teachers, mentors and pupils experience and view the project
- whether there is promising evidence that the project is achieving its intended outcomes.
The findings of the study will help Titan Partnership and their delivery partners, Lime and Emerge Leadership, to shape future delivery and inform the decision on scaling up the CRC Project.
What's involved?
For Pupils
All children taking part will be asked to complete a short online survey about their thoughts and feelings before the start of the project in September 2021 and then again at the end of the project in July 2022. Each survey will take around 15 minutes to complete.
We’ll also be visiting schools between February to June 2022, where one of our researchers will:
- watch a Choices lesson or mentoring session
- have a group discussion with 4-5 pupils about the CRC Project lesson
- have a short interview with individual pupils about the 1-2-1 mentoring session.
- have a group discussion with 4-5 pupils about the group mentoring
For Parents/Carers
We would like to speak with parents of children who have taken part in mentoring sessions about how they view the sessions and the extent to which they think they have supported their child. A teacher might ask you if you’d like to take part in a short interview with a NatCen researcher, in May/June 2022. It’s entirely up to you if you want to take part.
For Teachers
We will observe an online CRC Project Teacher training session in December 2021 to understand how the training is delivered.
We will visit each school taking part in this research between February and June 2022. On the day of the school visit, one of our researchers will observe a CRC Project lesson and may also invite you to take part in an interview about your experiences of delivering the Choices lessons, including what works well and less well, areas for improvement and any benefits for pupils.
In July 2022, we will also ask you to share attendance records of Choices lessons and pupil information, including their name, date of birth and Unique Pupil Number (UPN).
For CRC Champions
We will invite CRC Champions to take part in a telephone interview in May/June 2022 about how the CRC Project has worked in your school. We may also speak to CRC Champions at schools which have not been selected for the evaluation to gain a broader range of views of the project. We will also ask CRC Champions to coordinate and plan the school visits between February and June 2022.
For Mentors
We will observe a mentoring training session in February 2022. We will visit each school in the research between February and June 2022. On the day of the school visit, one of our researchers will:
- observe you and your colleague deliver a group mentoring session
- invite you to take part in a paired interview with your colleague about your experience of delivering the group and individual mentoring sessions, including what has worked well or less well, areas for improvement and any benefits for the pupils.
