Director of Data Collection
Steve Woodland

Steve Woodland is Director of Data Collection within the Social Surveys department at the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen). He has been working in social survey research since the mid-1990s, initially as a researcher where he has been responsible for the delivery of many of the UK’s largest household surveys including the Labour Force Survey, English Housing Survey and Family Resources Survey. He is the joint author of Britain at Work: As depicted by the 1998 Workplace Employee Relations Survey.

For 16 years Steve worked at the Office for National Statistics where he became more focused on the operational side of survey data collection.  There he led their face-to-face and telephone data collection operations, transforming many aspects of this including greater use of digital processes and introducing responsive designs. Since September 2022, Steve has been at NatCen, leading our field operations which collectively covers around 800 workers in face-to-face, biomedical and telephone data collection.
