National Travel Attitudes Study (NTAS)

NTAS uncovers the nation’s opinions on travel issues to help make travel and transport work for everyone.

About the study

Have your voice heard on all things travel. NTAS uncovers the nation’s opinions on travel issues to help make travel and transport work for everyone.

The National Travel Attitudes Study (NTAS) is a new research project which aims to understand your opinion on everything that is travel or transport related.

The Department for Transport (DfT) have appointed the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) to carry out this research. NTAS will inform future policy, ensuring DfT policies are well developed and its transport plans appropriate.

By answering NTAS questions, you could make a difference to transport planning and policy development. The findings can also be used by academics, businesses and the general public, as well as by campaigning organisations representing a wide range of groups, including motorists, cyclists, motorcyclists, the elderly, rural communities and children.

We will be in contact every few months and ask you to take part in a short questionnaire. The exact questions will vary, but will always relate to travel or transport in some way. The surveys will generally be online or over the phone.

Why have I been invited to join?

When you took part in an interview for the National Travel Survey, your interviewer asked if it would be okay to contact you. At the time you provided us with some contact details.

Everyone we have invited to take part has been carefully selected to provide a truly representative picture of England. We want to represent people of all walks of life and a full range of beliefs and opinions.

The National Travel Attitudes Study (NTAS) is your chance to share your views and experiences on issues related to travel, such as transport provision for disabled people, phone use while driving, and climate change. By taking part you’ll be ensuring that your views, and the views of people like you, are represented. Taking part in the study is voluntary. If you decide not to join in however, this means that your experience is less likely to be taken into account in transport planning.

Who funds the National Travel Attitudes Study?

The Department for Transport (DfT) funds this study to help improve travel policy in England. DfT work to support the transport network that helps UK's businesses, and gets people and goods travelling around the country.
