Privacy Notice for Pillars of Independent Living Focus Groups 

This notice sets out how we will use your personal data, and your rights. It is made under Articles 13 and/or 14 of the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR).  

YOUR DATA  

Purpose 

The purpose(s) for which we are processing your personal data is(are):  

The purpose of this project is to conduct qualitative research and analysis with disabled people focused around the 12 pillars of independent living to gather insights, develop the evidence base, and inform future data collection plans for the government's commitment to championing the rights of disabled people. This research will provide insights into disabled people’s views and perspectives on a broad range of areas of life exploring both the barriers and enablers.  

The National Centre for Social Research is acting on behalf of the Cabinet Office’s Office for Equality and Opportunity to carry out a series of focus groups with disabled people with research questions and discussions based around the 12 pillars of independent living.  

These focus groups will be recorded and transcribed. The National Centre for Social Research will redact personally identifiable information from these records as far as possible prior to running its analysis. The National Centre for Social Research will create a series of fully anonymised reports and findings to share with the Cabinet Office.

At no point will the Cabinet Office be able to identify any specific individuals as part of this processing activity.

  • Education
  • Employment status  

Legal basis of processing 

The legal basis for processing your personal data is that it is that you have provided your consent.

Sensitive personal data is personal data revealing racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religious or philosophical beliefs, or trade union membership, and the processing of genetic data, biometric data for the purpose of uniquely identifying a natural person, data concerning health or data concerning a natural person's sex life or sexual orientation. 

The legal basis for processing your sensitive personal data is that you have provided your explicit consent.

Please note, consent is being collected and recorded by The National Centre for Social Research. 

Recipients

The National Centre for Social Research will collect your data and will not share any personal data with the Cabinet Office. The National Centre for Social Research may use its own processor, Criteria, to assist with participant recruitment. 

Retention  

Transcripts and audio files will be kept for no longer than 30 days. Any other personal data, such as contact details, will be kept for this project for no longer than 1 year. 

YOUR RIGHTS  

You have the right to request information about how your personal data are processed, and to request a copy of that personal data.  

You have the right to request that any inaccuracies in your personal data are rectified without delay.  

You have the right to request that any incomplete personal data are completed, including by means of a supplementary statement.  

You have the right to request that your personal data are erased if there is no longer a justification for them to be processed.  

You have the right in certain circumstances (for example, where accuracy is contested) to request that the processing of your personal data is restricted.  

You have the right to update your personal data or withdraw consent to the processing of your personal data up until 15th of October, 2026.

INTERNATIONAL TRANSFERS  

Not applicable. Processing of personal data will be limited to the UK.
