Qualitative Interviews with Childminders

The Department for Education (DfE) have asked The National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) to conduct a study on current and former childminders to provide important insights to help the DfE shape policy.

The study will look at four key thematic areas: the challenges childminders face; retention and reasons for leaving the profession; the use of childminder assistants; and perceptions of childminder agencies.

This study is a follow-up to the 2021 Survey of Childcare and Early Years Providers (SCEYP). All current childminders who are being invited to take part agreed to being re-contacted for follow-up research when taking part in the 2021 SCEYP survey. Former childminders are being recruited through social media and with the help of current childminders.

What’s involved?

The research will involve telephone interviews with current and former childminders. Interviews are expected to last around 50 minutes and will take place between late June and the end of July 2022. As a thank you for taking part, we will send participants a £30 Love2Shop voucher, which can be spent in a wide range of high street or online shops.

What will you ask me about?

During the interview we will ask you about:

  • the challenges childminders face
  • what could help reduce these challenges
  • perceptions of childminder agencies
  • your experience and views of working with childminding assistants
  • and your future as a childminder

Why have I been selected to take part?

If you have been contacted directly by NatCen about taking part in this research, this is because in 2021 you took part in the Survey of Childcare and Early Years Providers (SCEYP) and agreed to be contacted again for future research. This new study is intended to learn more about some key topics relevant to childminders.

If you did not participate in SCEYP 2021 but formerly worked as a childminder, we would still like to hear from you. Please get in touch via email (  if you are interested in participating in an interview.

Do I have to take part?

Taking part is voluntary but we hope that you will take this opportunity to contribute to this important study.

We guard your privacy

We will treat the information you give us in the strictest confidence under the EU General Data Protection Regulation. Results collected will be used for research purposes only.

All data gathered from interviews will be anonymised before being analysed, and personal data will only be accessible to the research team at NatCen. At the end of the research, your personal information will be securely deleted.
