Diet, Nutrition and Activity during Covid-19 (DNAC-19) study

About the study

NatCen Social Research has been asked to carry out the Diet, Nutrition and Activity during Covid-19 study (DNAC-19) to help the Government understand and improve our health, by looking at the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on people’s nutrition and physical activity.

The study is being carried out by NatCen Social Research (NatCen) and the Medical Research Council Epidemiology Unit at the University of Cambridge on behalf of Public Health England (an Executive Agency of the Department of Health) and has been approved by the Cambridge South Research Ethics Committee.

Why have I been selected?

You have been invited to take part because you took part in the National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS) and agreed to be contacted again about future research.

What is involved?

You will be asked to complete an online questionnaire about impacts of Covid-19 pandemic on your/your child’s diet, nutrition and physical activity – this shouldn’t take more than about 10 minutes. We will then ask you to complete an online food record called Intake24 to tell us everything you had to eat and drink on the previous day and if you are 16 years or older, to complete a short online physical activity questionnaire. You don’t have to answer any questions or take part in any sections of the study you don’t want to.

You should have received a letter from us about taking part in the DNAC-19. If so, you can complete your online questionnaire using the link and access code on your letter. If you don’t use the link, you will either be sent a text and/or email re-inviting you to take part, or you will be contacted by telephone by one of NatCen’s interviewers.

At the end of your online questionnaire you will be given a link to your first Intake24 recall. You will then be invited via email and/or text to complete three more recalls over 2 weeks. Upon completion of your 4th and final recall, you will be asked to complete a physical activity questionnaire if you:

  • are aged 16 or older
  • provided us with your email address
  • have access to a laptop, computer or a tablet (the questionnaire cannot be completed on a mobile phone)

What will I get for taking part?

Upon completion of 4 recalls you will be able to access personalised dietary feedback and a £15 voucher will be sent to you via email or post. If you are eligible for the physical activity questionnaire, you will also receive a £5 voucher on its completion.

Why do you need my email and/or mobile number?

We will use your email and/or mobile number to send you invitations to complete your dietary recalls and to remind you about completing them. You will not be able to fully participate in the study if we cannot contact you by email and/or text message.

We will also use your email address to send you your electronic voucher upon completion of all 4 recalls (and if applicable, the physical activity questionnaire).

Privacy notice

We will handle your data in accordance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The survey findings are anonymised and nothing we publish will identify you. This study is part of the National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS) and is covered by the NDNS privacy notice. You can access the privacy notice here.
