Experiences of pension choices and decisions

If you have a defined contribution (DC) pension scheme and are aged 50 or above, we would like to hear about your thoughts and experiences of your pension. We are interviewing people for a study that will help the Department for Work and Pensions to understand how people make decisions about accessing their pension and how they feel about those decisions.

What’s involved?

We would like you to take part in an in-depth discussion (‘interview’) about your thoughts on your pension. You do not need to be an expert in pensions to participate and NatCen can assure you that this study is not about selling you any products.

The interview will be with a NatCen researcher and last up to 90 minutes and will be similar to a conversation. It will be held at a time and place that suits you.

What will I receive for taking part?

You will be given £30 in cash after the interview as a thank you for your time.

Do I need to prepare?

You may want to familiarise yourself with the pensions you have; other than that, there is nothing else you need to do to prepare for the interview. You also don’t need any special knowledge - we just want to hear about your experiences and what you think. Most people agree to be interviewed and enjoy taking part.

Can I request special arrangements?

You can request special arrangements. Please mention to the recruiter or the researcher who calls you if you have specific needs which should be accommodated for the interview. This could include support for a disability or health condition or having someone else accompany you (such as a friend, a relative or a support worker).

What will you ask me about?

We will ask you about your thoughts on your pension plan, whether you have or intend to make decisions about accessing your pension savings and your understanding of the pension products available to you.

Do I have to answer all the questions?

Don’t worry – you don’t have to answer any questions you don’t want to, we can just skip on to the next one or take a break if you need to. You are also free to change your mind about being interviewed at any point, including during the interview.

How will you deal with my personal information?

We will treat the information you give us in the strictest confidence under the Data Protection Act 1998 and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). You can find out more about our credentials and who we are here and how we protect your personal information here.

Why have I been selected to take part?

We are aiming to interview a range of people with a DC pension, of different ages and from different areas of the UK. You have been approached by one of the Propeller recruiters that we work with to take part in the study.

Who funds the study?

The study is funded by the Department for Work and Pensions.
