Survey of Early Years Support for Disadvantaged Children

This is an important new research project which builds on the information gathered in the Survey of Childcare and Early Years Providers 2019. It will provide the Department for Education with crucial information about the use of and access to funding and support for disadvantaged pre-school children, the home learning environment and food provision in the early years sector in England. Results from this research will help to identify gaps and inform future policy. This is your chance to have your say about your experience of early years support and funding for disadvantaged children. The research is being carried out by the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) and Frontier Economics on behalf of the Department for Education.

What’s involved?

Taking part involves completing a short 15-minute survey online at a time that suits you. You will receive a link to the survey and log-in details by letter and email. You will also be sent a preparation sheet with more information about the type of questions you will be asked, including some things that you might want to look up in advance.

What will you ask me about?

The survey will ask you about funding and support for disadvantaged pre-school children, the home learning environment and early years food provision. We will combine your answers with the answers you gave in the Survey of Childcare and Early Years Providers 2019. This means that you won’t need to answer questions that you have already answered though we may check some details in case they have changed.

This is not a test or assessment, we just want to hear about your experience in these areas, including what works for you and which challenges you face.

Do I have to answer all the questions?

Don’t worry – you don’t have to answer any questions you don’t want to, you can just skip on to the next one.

If you feel that another person or persons working at your setting are better placed to answer the questions, you can pass on the log-in details and ask them to complete the survey instead.

We guard your privacy

We will treat the information you give us in the strictest confidence under the EU General Data Protection Regulation. The results collected will be used for research purposes only. Your personal information will be stored securely and no one but the research teams at NatCen and Frontier Economics will be able to access it. At the end of the research, all data will be anonymised before being passed on to the Department for Education, and your personal information will be securely deleted.

You can see our privacy notice here.

Why have I been selected to take part?

Earlier this year you took part in the Survey of Childcare and Early Years Providers 2019 and agreed to be re-contacted for future research. This new study is intended to learn more about some important topics relevant to early years providers.
