What is the NatCen Opinion Panel?

The NatCen Panel is a community of thousands of people from England, Scotland and Wales who share their opinions on a variety of important topics. We use the information to tell people in government, charities and universities what the public really thinks.

Who are NatCen Social Research?

We are Britain’s largest independent social research agency. For 50 years, we have worked with charities and government to find out what people really think about the big issues. NatCen is independent of all government departments and political parties.

What will taking part involve?

As a member of the NatCen Panel you will be invited, every few weeks or so, to take part in short questionnaires lasting around 15 minutes. You can participate online or over the phone.

What will you ask me questions about?

We will ask your opinion on a range of topics, from housing and education, to health and happiness, or government policy and Brexit. We’ll also ask your opinion on current events as they’re happening.

Who is funding the NatCen Panel?

Our research is funded by a variety of organisations, including government departments, charities, and universities.

How did you get my contact details?

When you took part in an interview for the British or Scottish Social Attitudes or the National Values Survey your interviewer asked if it would be okay to contact you. At the time you provided us with some contact details.

What will you do with the information I give?

The information you give will be used for research purposes only. Most of the results will appear as percentages and statistics - we will not identify your individual opinion without seeking your permission. Sometimes we will analyse your answers together with answers you gave to previous questionnaires to help us to understand things like how people’s views are changing over time.

All your information will be held until no longer required, in accordance with current data protection legislation. Under this legislation, NatCen is the ‘Data Controller’ and we hold your information on the basis of ‘Legitimate Interest’ because our research aims to tell people in government, charities and universities what people really think. You have the right to request access to your data, to amend it if it is incorrect, or to ask for it to be deleted.

Will I receive a voucher for taking part?

You will receive a shopping voucher as a thank you for taking part in most questionnaires. Participation is always voluntary but we like to acknowledge your contribution where we can. Each invitation will explain clearly what you will receive for taking part.

Do I have to take part in every questionnaire?

Participation in any questionnaire is completely voluntary – it’s your choice. Being part of the NatCen Panel is entirely voluntary. If you would like to leave the panel simply get in touch.
