Tackling HBT bullying among school-age children and young people

Teenage girls
Researchers: Martin Mitchell
Published: October 2014

Aim

We were asked by the Government Equalities Office to conduct this research so that they can better understand how to prevent and reduce homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying among school-age children and young people. The research was also supported by the Department for Education and the Welsh Government.

Outputs

We have produced two reports, the first is an evidence review and typology of initiatives, the main report details what initiatives were considered by teachers, other providers and young people to be more or less successful.

Methods

The study involved:

  • an evidence assessment to establish the types of anti-HBT bullying initiatives that were happening and what was known about their effectiveness,
  • an online mapping exercise to see which types of initiatives were being used,
  • depth interviews with 20 teachers and other providers involved in the delivery of anti-HBT bullying initiatives across a range of schools
  • four detailed school case studies.
