Success factors for community businesses

Research that identifies four key factors that contribute to a successful community business.

Aim

To explore the factors that contribute to successful community businesses in the housing, transport and pubs sectors. 

This exploratory piece of research will inform the longer-term research and evaluation programme of Power to Change, who commissioned NatCen Social Research and WPI Economics to carry out this project. 

Findings

Four factors are crucial to a successful community business:

  • a solid business model based on local demand,
  • partnerships with other like-minded organisations,
  • a group of committed volunteers
  • a close working relationship the local authority.

Methods

The study comprised five phases of work: stakeholder interviews, desk research, and development of a set of success factors for community businesses, case studies of successful community businesses from the housing sector and the development of a measurement framework.
