Living standards in Britain 2012

Couple with cat
Researchers: Joanne Maher
Published: March 2012

Aim

Living Standards in Britain 2012 aims to:

  • Improve the measurement of poverty, deprivation, social exclusion and standard of living
  • Measure the change in the nature and extent of poverty and social exclusion over the past ten years
  • Produce policy-relevant results about the causes and outcomes of poverty and social exclusion and how best to address these problems.

Methodology

  • Interviews with respondents about all issues affecting their living standards - in particular they will be asked about items they do not have because they cannot afford them. Results will then be compared to a list of things that at least 50% of the general population said were necessities of daily living (as identified in a separate study).
