The National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) has today launched its new Methodology and Innovation hub.
Led by new Director of Methods, Gerry Nicolaas, the hub will be an independent source of best practice advice, facilitating innovation in social research methods, whilst developing methodologies that are embedded within the practice of conducting social research.
The hub pools the vast and diverse experience of NatCen’s researchers and operational staff, collaborating to maximise agility and creativity at a time of accelerating change in the field. It will open up new opportunities for methodological research and enable greater cooperation with the wider research community, as well as establishing strong relationships with government, academic and private institutions.
For almost five decades, NatCen has been listening to the public and making sure their voice is heard. Research methodology is the science behind asking the right questions, of the right people, in the right way. Getting this right will improve the quality and validity of the information being used in decision-making and ensure that research will have a positive impact on society.
Gerry Nicolaas joined NatCen in August. She was previously Head of Data Collection Methodology at the Ipsos MORI Research Methods Centre, with over 20 years’ experience in methods, including previously at NatCen and the University of Manchester. Gerry is also the General Secretary of the European Survey Research Association (ESRA).
Gerry says “I am delighted to take forward NatCen’s Methodology and Innovation hub, which will offer invaluable, applicable advice. This is a fantastic opportunity to project the organisation into the future of methodology and innovation.”
