National Travel Survey
A Questionnaire Development & Testing case study
The Questionnaire Development & Testing Hub was commissioned by the Department for Transport (DfT) to carry out a two-stage project to review and redesign the existing travel diary used on the National Travel Survey (NTS).
How we helped
The NTS diary collects detailed information on travel behaviour over a seven day time frame, with the aim to integrate the survey questionnaire’s responses.
In Stage 1 of the study, NatCen researchers evaluated the existing travel record using a mixed method approach, which included secondary analysis, workshops with interviewers and cognitive interviews. In Stage 2 the diary was redesigned, cognitively tested and piloted in order to understand its effectiveness in gathering quality data.
This study was able to shed light on the dynamics surrounding the decline in information previously registered throughout the diary, particularly in trips.
